Sir Coates has gone on quite the journey since Dunc and I started the DRPA over 6 years ago. Back when we were setting up the DRPA, we really wanted a mascot, and after a bit of time, we went to an artist friend of ours, Sam ‘Moonskin’ Lamont, who was happy to create the character for us. And well, after a few chats, Sir Coates was born!

Around a year later, we were approached by Trans Atlantis Games to create a paint line with them. As part of the very first Kickstarter, we had the opportunity to have some miniatures made as stretch goals, so Dunc and I came up with some characters, with one of them obviously being Sir Coates. We had a blast creating this miniature as well as the others, and that was when the seed of an idea was planted…

As the years passed and the game started to take shape and evolve, we knew that we would have to update him and the other characters to fit with the game. So, off we went and got hold of an ex-GW work colleague and artist, Phil Moss, who I worked closely with on concepting and redesigning the characters, old and new.

Once we were happy with the concepts, it was time to get sculpting, and the team at Wargames Atlantic did a superb job (thanks Rob!) After some back and forth, design changes etc., the valiant Sir Coates was sculpted!

…and then Natalie used her incrdible skills to paint the miniature. And here he is…

We knew we had to get Sir Coates right. And in the end, we were really happy with the final result. So how does this legendary character play on the tabletop? Well, let’s just say if you are playing the Ravenweald or any good faction, you’d probably want him on your team. That sword and his heroic abilities will probably prove pretty useful…
